The stillborn baby was placed in the arms of its older brother. Seconds later, a scream was heard!
Ethan had been waiting for months for his little brother to arrive. The thought of having a playmate, someone to share his toys and secrets with, made him incredibly excited. Every day he talked to his mother’s growing belly and dreamed of all the adventures they would have together. He had already chosen names for their toy dinosaurs and planned every game they would play.
One day, while helping his mother Sarah to set up the nursery, he looked up at her and asked, “Mom, do you think he’ll like dinosaurs as much as I do?”
Sarah smiled warmly as she folded a tiny baby outfit. “I’m sure he’ll love everything you show him, my love. You’ll be a fantastic big brother.”
Ethan’s face shone with pure joy. In his eyes, everything was absolutely perfect. His father, Michael, was busy with work most of the time, but he always made sure to kiss Sarah’s belly and whisper to the baby before bedtime. Ethan gently placed his ear against her belly and waited patiently for any sign of movement. Whenever he felt a kick, he exclaimed excitedly, “He kicked me! He can’t wait to meet us!” Their home was filled with happiness and hope.
Then, one day, everything collapsed.
It began as a perfectly normal morning, like any other. Michael had left for work early, given Sarah a quick kiss, and told Ethan to look after his mother. A few hours later, Ethan was playing with his dinosaurs in his room when he heard a crash in the kitchen. He immediately stopped playing. Something didn’t feel right.
“Mom, is everything alright?” he called nervously. There was no answer.
He rushed into the kitchen and saw Sarah lying motionless on the floor, her face pale and her eyes closed. Fear gripped him, but he forced himself to remain calm and remember what his parents had taught him. With trembling hands, he grabbed her phone, called 911, and tried his best to explain what had happened.
“Please come quickly. My mother is pregnant and she has fallen. Something is very wrong.”
When the ambulance arrived, Ethan refused to leave Sarah’s side. “I have to go with her,” he insisted. “I promised to protect them both.” The paramedics understood and let him come along. He held her hand tightly the entire way to the hospital.
At the hospital, the doctors quickly took Sarah to the operating room. Ethan tried to follow them, but someone stopped him.
“Please let me stay with her,” he begged desperately. “I promised to stay by her side.”
But the heavy doors closed in front of him, leaving him alone in the hallway. Shortly after, Michael rushed into the hospital, looking frightened and out of breath. He found Ethan crying in the waiting area.
“Dad, they’ve taken her to surgery,” Ethan sobbed. “They won’t let me see her. What if something bad happens to her?”
Michael wrapped his arms tightly around his son. “Your mother is incredibly strong, Ethan. And you are strong too. I promise you, everything will be alright.”
But none of them could have imagined what was about to happen. Dr. Morgan came out to speak with them, her face very serious. She explained carefully that Sarah had suffered a placental abruption, a sudden and very dangerous pregnancy complication. Sarah was losing a lot of blood. The doctors had to act extremely quickly, and because of the baby’s position, delivery would be incredibly risky.
Then she said something that completely shattered her world.
“I’m very sorry, but we can’t save both of them,” Dr. Morgan said quietly. “There simply isn’t enough time. You’ll have to make a decision.”
Michael felt the ground disappear beneath him. “What are you saying? Make a decision? I don’t understand.”
“You have to decide now,” the doctor said gently. “We can save your wife or we can save the baby. Not both.”…. Read more in the first comment below👇
