After 12 years of marriage, I was handed a cracked Easter egg that my five-year-old son had found in our yard, and inside there was a note: “CHECK YOUR HUSBAND’S CAR.”
I was washing dishes after breakfast when Tommy ran into the kitchen, his knees covered in dirt. He held a purple plastic egg, cracked along one side.
“Mommy, look what I found by the fence!”
I took the egg, and it felt heavier than it should have. Something rattled inside. I opened it, and a folded piece of paper fell onto the counter.
It looked ordinary — white and small — until I read it.
“CHECK YOUR HUSBAND’S CAR.”
The words were printed in careful block letters, as if someone had thought it through. This was not a child’s prank. Someone had placed it in our yard on purpose, knowing my son would find it.
“What does it say, Mommy?”
My throat tightened. I told him it was just an old shopping list. The lie came too easily.
Tommy ran back outside, and I stayed there. Through the window, I could see Mike’s black sedan parked in the driveway where he had left it last night.
But now the car looked different. It seemed like it was hiding something.
I read the note again. After twelve years together, someone believed I needed to know something about my husband.
The kitchen felt too quiet.
The worst part was not the note, but the fact that I truly wanted to know the truth.
So I grabbed my keys and walked toward his car. ⬇️⬇️⬇️
