That day, the bus was so crowded that people had to hold onto each other to avoid falling on the turns. Inside, there was a constant murmur: some people were arguing, some were looking at their phones, and others were simply enduring the crowd in silence.
At one of the stops, an elderly woman slowly got on, using a cane. She moved very carefully, as if every step was difficult. People shifted slightly to make room, but there were almost no free seats. And suddenly, she noticed one — next to a young man.
The guy was sitting sprawled out, with his legs wide apart, and his backpack was on the seat next to him. Moreover, he had stretched his leg out so that it took up almost half of the aisle. He looked self-satisfied, as if the bus belonged only to him.
The woman stepped closer and said quietly, almost in a whisper:
— Young man, could you please move your bag… I would like to sit down.
The guy didn’t even turn his head. He pretended not to hear.
The woman stood there for a moment, then carefully reached toward the backpack to free the seat. But at that moment, the guy suddenly jerked, as if someone had hit him, jumped up and shouted:
— What are you doing?! Who gave you permission to touch my things?! I’m calling the police right now!
The bus grew quieter. People started turning around.
— I just wanted to sit… — the woman replied, confused. — It’s free here, I asked first…
The guy smirked, looked down at her and said coldly:
— This seat is taken.
— And by whom? — she asked softly.
Without hesitation, he replied with a smug smile:
— By my leg.
After those words, he demonstratively threw his heavy leg onto the seat and added:
— And besides… you smell like old age. I don’t want to sit next to you.
A heavy silence filled the bus. Some people lowered their eyes, others pressed their lips together, but no one stepped in.
